The Guidance of Older Men

Written by Vearna Gloster.

Young men today need to have reassurance from the older men that they can do things right.  Recently, I observed that a young man was put to do the small task of sealing or patching as we say here, a bicycle tube for his sister.  He took his time and completed the job.  However, the older man, his uncle, was to pump it up and replace it in the tyre.  The older man grumbled that the patch did not look right and proceeded to do the airing up followed by the water test.   After doing the water test for air leakage, he was amazed that there was none.  I asked him if he did not have the confidence that the youngster was capable of doing the task.  His answer came back with a resounding no!  I was totally taken aback and curious as to why but of course he had no answer.

Fathers, uncles, older men on a whole need to reflect on how they behave toward young boys.  They need to be much more supportive to the young men in society as they would on day be fathers and uncles too.  If thy are underestimated now and interest from the elders are not shown with a positive attitude, then this is yet another breach in helping upcoming generations to hold strong in their aspirations.
